Autograph Letter Signed: "Mary Garden," 1p, 5x7. On stationery
of the Hotel Napoléon Bonaparte, Corsica, 1934 July 29. To Mrs. G.P. Newell,
Portland, Oregon. In full: "It is with pleasure I send you my
autograph. Kind regards & greetings" Ink transfer in blank areas from
being folded when wet, else fine condition. With original stamped,
postmarked hotel envelope addressed by Garden. Lightly creased and worn,
else fine. Scottish-born singer Mary Garden (1874-1967) performed most
frequently in Chicago and Paris, earning the moniker "The Sarah Barnhart of
opera." She was known for her brains and acting talent as well as for her
voice and the diversity of her roles. Her performance of Richard Strauss'
Salome, beginning in 1907, scandalized some audiences, requiring
occasional cancellation of scheduled performances. Two
