MARY GARDEN
Mary Garden signs an autograph sentiment on the back of one of her
calling cards.
Autograph Sentiment signed: "Very Cordially -/Mary
Garden/1914", 4¼x3 card. Written on verso of card with her printed name and
address: "Mademoiselle Mary Garden/148 Avenue Malakoff". Scottish-born singer
Mary Garden (1874-1967) performed most frequently in Chicago and Paris,
earning the moniker "The Sarah Barnhart of opera." She was known for her
brains and acting talent as well as for her voice and the diversity of her
roles. Her performance of Richard Strauss' Salome, beginning in 1907,
scandalized some audiences, requiring occasional cancellation of scheduled
performances. Mounting paper and adhesive remnants on printed side show through
lightly. Otherwise, fine condition.
