13th 86", 5x8½. Letterhead of Editorial Rooms, St. Nicholas (magazine), New
York. Accompanied by autograph envelope, unsigned, but addressed in
signer's hand to Henry E. Allen, Grand Rapids, Michigan. Printed return address
of St. Nicholas. Mary Mapes Dodge (1831-1905) began writing
professionally when her financially troubled husband died in 1858, an apparent
suicide. In 1864 she published a children's novel, Hans Brinker, or The
Silver Skates, which became a best seller. Dodge was for many years the
household and children's editor at Harriet Beecher Stowe's Hearth and
Home magazine. She was the founding editor of St. Nicholas Magazine
(1873), the most popular children's magazine of the era. It published works by
Mark Twain, Louisa May Alcott and Robert Louis Stevenson. Normal mailing folds.
