MARY PHILBIN. Photograph signed: "Best Wishes,/Mary Philbin". B/w, 10x8. Depicted in her role as the original Christine Daae in the 1924 classic, The Phantom of the Opera. She is pictured with Lon Chaney, who played the title character. Stage and screen actress Mary Philbin (1903-1993) made her film debut in the 1921 melodrama, The Blazing Trail. She got her big break two years later, when she was cast in The Merry-Go-Round (1923). The film, which made her a Hollywood star, resulted in other roles, including Where is This West?, The Age of Desire, The Temple of Venus and The Thrill Chaser (all 1923), as well as numerous magazine covers and endorsements for various products. Philbin disappeared from view after making her last film, After the Fog, in 1929. Although she corresponded with fans, Philbin, who had an unrequited love affair with Universal Studios' executive/producer Paul Kohner, became a recluse and was rarely seen in public. She ventured out to attend a memorial service for Rudolph Valentino in 1931, but Philbin did not make any more public appearances until she attended the opening night of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical production of The Phantom of the Opera in Los Angeles. She also helped to promote Philip Riley's version of the same work. Slightly creased at blank corners and upper right margin and background. Fine condition.
