MARY REEVES
Mary Reeves signs a check with her married name for $136.54.
Check filled out and signed: "Mrs. James. T. Reeves", 6x2¾.
Shreveport, Louisiana, 1954 September 27. Check No. 183, drawn on the
account of James T. Reeves at Commercial National Bank in Shreveport,
payable to "First Federal Savings & Loan Ass." for $136.54. Mary
Reeves was the wife and business partner of popular country singer, "Gentleman"
Jim Reeves, whose pop singles, including "Four Walls" (1957) and
"He'll Have to Go" (1959), defined both his style and an entire era of
country music. From 1955 through 1969, "Gentleman" Jim Reeves (1923-1964) was
consistently in the country and pop charts, which is all the more remarkable as
Reeves was killed when his private plane crashed outside Nashville in 1964.
His continuing popularity was largely due to the efforts of his widow, who
sought out any tape or recording of Jim's voice and periodically released "new"
albums. Mary, who later married businessman Terry Davis, died on November
11, 1999. Show through of bank stamps on verso and bank cancellation holes touch
2 lines of writing. Fine condition.
