MARY SHAW
Handwritten and dated letter on Shaw's theatre experiences, written the year
of her death
Typed letter signed "Mary Shaw". 2 pages (front and verso), 6x9¼, on
Hotel Wellington, New York stationery. New York, New York, June 25, 1929.
Addressed to "Mr. Maxwell". In full: "My dear Mr. Maxwell: I
received your letter some what late delayed by having been sent to Equity- I
have no idea how many words you want (or how few I should say.) I played many
engagements at the Broadway Theatre, notably in the original cast of Ben Hur -
in Marie Corelli's 'Sorrows of Satan' and with Wojeiha and Warlowe - I am a
better talker than writer having a 'gift of gab' - If you could send some one up
to the hotel to talk with me who knows just what would be interesting I should
be glad to tell some things that strike me as good stage history. Or is it too
late? Anyway I want you at the Theatre Magazine to know the spirit was willing.'
Always yours,". Shaw (1854-1929) was an American actress, playwright,
suffragette and feminist. She wrote the plays The Parrot Cage, which
portrayed women as caged birds who have forgotten freedom, and The Women of
It: or, Our Friends the Anti-Suffragists. She also played in many
controversial plays during her career, including Henrik Ibsen's Ghosts
and Hedda Gabler and George Bernard Shaw's Mrs. Warren's
Profession. Lightly toned and creased. Small tears on edges. Rounded and
creased corners. Page has been folded in eights and unfolded. Otherwise in fine
condition.
