MARY STEWART
Rare typed letter signed by the English novelist saying that she
unfortunately has no time to do any reading to help critique a new book right
now due to her own struggle to "get a new novel off the ground"
Typed letter signed: "Mary Stewart", 1p, 5¼x6¾. Edinburgh,
1980 May 2. On her personal letterhead to Miss Erika Holzer, New
York. In full: "Thank you so much for your letter of April 19th and
for the most interesting enclosures. I really am terribly sorry, but I
really have a cruel working schedule that does not allow me to
do any extra 'reading' of the kind that you request of me. I have had to make it
a personal rule to decline all such requests, which, as you so rightly assume,
come very frequently. Just at present I am struggling very hard to get a new
novel off the ground and simply have no time or energy to spare. But please let
me wish you all the best with your novel. Yours sincerely."English
author MARY STEWART (1916-2014) was likely referring to finishing her
novel, A Walk in Wolf Wood, which was published in 1980. The previous
year, she had published The Last Enchantment, her trilogy about Merlin
and King Arthur. Lawyer turned author ERIKA HOLZER wrote two novels,
Double Crossing (1983), a human rights espionage drama, and Eye for an
Eye (1994), which was filmed in 1996. She sought endorsements for her 1983
novel from prominent writers of the day. Normal mailing folds. Light surface
creases. Corners slightly worn and creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
