Donald Sutherland and Elliott Gould sign a color publicity still from
their film M*A*S*H.
Photograph signed: "Donald/Sutherland" and "Elliott
Gould". Color, 10x8. Still from the 1970 film, M*A*S*H, in which
Sutherland starred as Captain Benjamin Franklin "Hawkeye" Pierce and Gould
co-starred as Captain John Francis Xavier "Trapper John" McIntyre. The
comedy/drama, set during the Korean War, was nominated for Academy Awards
for Best Picture, Best Director (Robert Altman), Best Supporting Actress (Sally
Kellerman) and Best Editing and won the Oscar for Best Adapted
Screenplay. In the year he this film was released, Sutherland also starred in
Start the Revolution Without Me, Kelly's Heroes, Act of the
Heart and Alex in Wonderland, while Gould also starred in Getting
Straight, Move and I Love My Wife in 1970. Tall, lanky and
bearing perhaps the most enjoyably sinister face this side of Vincent Price,
Canadian-born actor DONALD SUTHERLAND (born in 1935) made a name for
himself in some of the most influential films of the 1970s and early
1980s. By the early 1970s, Sutherland had become something of a bona fide
star, thanks to lead roles in films like Start the Revolution without Me
and M*A*S*H (both 1970). Sutherland, who has made over 100
films over his career, has also starred in such films as The Dirty
Dozen (1967), Klute (1971), Invasion of the Body Snatchers
(1978), Ordinary People (1980), Max Dugan Returns (1983),
Backdraft (1991), Space Cowboys (2000), The Italian Job
(2003), Cold Mountain (2003) and Pride & Prejudice (2005). He
has also appeared in a number of made-for-TV movies, guest starred on
several TV series and began a regular role as Nathan Templeton on
Commander In Chief in 2005. His five children include actors
Keifer and Rossif Sutherland and TV post-production supervisor Rachel,
Keifer's twin sister. Stage, screen and television actor ELLIOTT GOULD,
born Elliott Goldstein in 1938, reached stardom with his nomination for a
Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for Bob and Carol and Ted and
Alice (1969), and he followed that success with the film version of
M*A*S*H (1970). Despite fine performances in films such as The
Long Goodbye, he declined as a box office draw. Gould, however, remains
active in supporting and cameo roles in films, including Ocean's Eleven
(2001) and its sequels, and on television, including a recurring role as Jack
Geller, the father of Ross and Monica, on Friends. He also co-starred
in the 2002 sitcom, Baby Bob. Gould, who was married to Barbra
Streisand from 1963-1967, starred opposite her in Broadway's I Can Get It
For You Wholesale. Gould and Streisand are the parents of actor Jason
Gould. Light surface crease (barely visible) at upper left background. Fine
condition.
