English Victorian poet Matthew Arnold (1822-1888) was Professor of Poetry at Oxford
from 1857-1867. Noted for his literary and social attacks on contemporary tastes and
manners, he wrote both meditative poetry and notable essays, including "The Function of
Criticism at the Present Time" (1865) and "The Study of Poetry". Ink lightly smudged at the
