irregularly cut sheet. The foremost literary critic of his age, English Victorian poet Matthew
Arnold (1822-1888) was Professor of Poetry at Oxford from 1857-1867. Noted for his
literary and social attacks on contemporary tastes and manners, he wrote both meditative
poetry and notable essays, including "The Function of Criticism at the Present Time" (1865)
and "The Study of Poetry". Signature sheet is lightly soiled and shaded at right margin,
touching the "ld." of Arnold and 3 letters of inscription. Mounting sheet is slightly soiled at
blank right margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
