MATTHIEU ORFILA
Extremely rare signature from the Forensic Toxicology pioneer, signed at the closing of a letter
Typed letter fragment signed: "Orfila", in black ink, 5½x1¼. Closing roughly translated: "By the Minister: Secretary Advisor of the Royal Council of Public Instruction". Matthieu Orfila (1878-1853) was a pioneer in the field of Forensic Toxicology, and is often considered one of the founders of the field. His breakthrough was in the criminal trial of Frenchwoman Maria LaFarge, who was accused of poisoning her husband with arsenic; however, no arsenic could be found in the victim's body to convict her, although it was found in his food and in LaFarge's possession. Orfila found that the test that was used, the Marsh Test, had been done incorrectly and was unable to detect the arsenic. Orfila then redid the test himself, and found the presence of arsenic in the victim's body, which helped in the conviction of LaFarge. Heavily toned. Irregularly cut. Crease on left margin. Faint stains on bottom margin from wax seals on verso. Slight surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
