MATTIA BATTISTINI
Vintage photograph (4½x7½) of "The King of Baritones". Extremely rare!
Inscribed Photograph signed: [in Italian, not translated] "A la grande artiste.../a la incomparable Martin de. Robano/ A las charmante amie/ a ma chere EddithM. Battistini/Paris /1917", in black ink. B/w, 4½x7½. Mattia Battistini (1856-1928) was an Italian operatic baritone, credited the title "The King of Baritones" for his rich, naturally beautiful voice. Born into a well-to-do medical family in Rome, Battistini made his debut at the Teatro Argentina, Rome portraying Alfonso in La Favorita (Donzietti, 1878). In his first few years he toured Italy, appearing in La forza del destino, Il trovatore, Rigoletto, Il Guarany, Gli Ugonotti among others. His performance of II Barbiere di Siviglia in Spain remains one of his most famous works of his career. In 1883, Battistini debuted at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. In 1886 he debuted at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, and in 1888 La Scala, Milan. He also spent much of his career in Russia with the Mariinsky theatre (Saint Petersburg) and Bolshoi theatre (Moscow). Toned. Edges and corners creased and worn with small tears. Small nick at top edge. Soiled. Signature has been double written with a second, darker pen. Moisture defects at the left edge. Photographers' stamp on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
