MAUD BALLINGTON BOOTH. ALS: "Maud B Booth", 1p, 3¼x5¼.
Blue Point, Long Island, no year, September 14. To unknown
recipient. Begins: "Dear Sir". In full: "My husband gave
me your message but I would rather talk with you before giving any promise Could
you call at No 1. 4th Avenue Friday at noon? Yours truly". Blue Point was
the Booths' summer home on Long Island. Mrs. Booth also had a retreat cottage on
Fire Island, where she began writing her autobiography. Maud Charlesworth
(1865-1948), who joined the Salvation Army in 1882, married Ballington Booth,
the son of the organization's founder, in 1886. To honor him, she added her
husband's first name to hers. The British couple took command of the Salvation
Army branch in the U.S. a year later. After a disagreement with William Booth in
1896, they resigned from the Salvation Army and established the Volunteers of
America, a rival but similar organization devoted to religious and charitable
causes. Mrs. Booth later became absorbed with prison reform. Slightly creased.
Lightly soiled at upper blank margin. Pencil note (unknown hand) on verso (no
show through). Fine condition.
