MAUD BALLINGTON BOOTH. TLS: "Maud B. Booth", ¼p, 8½x11. New York, New York, 1913 April 22.On letterhead of the Volunteer Prison League/Volunteers of America to Miss Grace J. Russell, Brooklyn, New York. Begins: "Dear Friend". In full: "I thank you most cordially for the kind donation which you have sent to the work. We do appreciate the token of your sympathy and shall use it so as to bring the best help and comfort to those who have for so long needed the interest and practical aid of the more fortunate. Very truly yours". Maud Charlesworth (1865-1948), who joined the Salvation Army in 1882, married Ballington Booth, the son of the organization's founder, in 1886. To honor him, she added her husband's first name to hers. The British couple took command of the Salvation Army branch in the U.S. a year later. After a disagreement with William Booth in 1896, they resigned from the Salvation Army and established the Volunteers of America, a rival but similar organization devoted to religious and charitable causes. Mrs. Booth later became absorbed with prison reform. Lightly creased with folds, light vertical fold at the "d" of Maud. ½x¼-inch paper loss at upper right blank margin. Slightly soiled and shaded. Mounting remnants on verso (no show through). Overall, fine condition.
