MAURICE HINDUS
Signature from the Russian-American author and war correspondent in blue ink
Signature: "Maurice/Hindus", in blue ink, 6x4½. Russian-Americana author Maurice Hindus (1891-1969) came to the United States in 1905, settling in New York City with his mother and siblings. He worked as an errand boy while attending night classes, traveling across the New York area to work on several different farms. He originally planned to enroll at Cornell University to pursue agriculture, but instead was accepted to Colgate University, where he earned a degree in literature in 1915. He published his first book five years later, and after returning to Russia, published several books and articles based on the culture and life style. He returned back and forth from Russia and the U.S. for several years, staying for an extended period to become a Russian war correspondent during World War II. Some of his most famous books are Mother Russia (1943), Crisis in the Kremlin (1953), and Red Bread (1931). Tear on left margin. Light surface creases. Binding hole on left margin. Paper clipping affixed to bottom margin. Ink notes (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
