MAURY WILLS and DAVEY LOPES
Black and white photo (3½x5) of the two record-setting base thieves
Photograph Signed: "Maury Wills" and "Davey Lopes". B/w, 3½x5. In 1961, MAURY WILLS (1932-2022) scored 104 runs and drew more walks while leading in stolen bases (35). He also won the first of his two Gold Gloves despite his not leading the NL in any fielding category. Wills broke Cobb's 47-year-old single season record for stolen bases and was voted the National League's Most Valuable Player in 1962. In that same year, he won another Gold Glove, led the NL with 10 triples, and reached career highs with 130 runs, 48 RBI, six HR, and 208 hits. His 695 at-bats missed the Major League record by one. One of the most effective thieves in a base-stealing era, DAVEY LOPES (b.1945) stole five bases in a game on August 24, 1974 to tie a 70-year-old NL record, and in 1975 he set a since-broken ML record with 38 consecutive successful steals. He was the league leader in 1975 (77) and 1976 (63). He also stole five in the 1981 NLCS and added four more in the World Series. He set the NLCS career record of nine stolen bases, and his ten in the WS impressed many. Lopes stole 47 bases at age thirty-nine and 25 at forty. His career total of 557 stolen bases ranked 10th all-time as the 1980s ended. Lopes won the 1978 Golden Glove at second base and had excellent power for his position. He was voted an All-Star from 1978-1981. Lightly worn at edges and corners. Otherwise, fine condition.
