MAX BAER Former heavyweight champ Baer signed this 6x8 membership application for the American Federation of Radio Artists in 1940. Document signed "Max Baer". With notations in pencil and blank ink in lower right corner in unknown hand. 2 pages, 6¼x8¼, 1 sheet, front and verso. May 16, 1940. Application for Membership in the New York Local of the American Federation of Radio Artists. Baer listed his profession as "prize fighter" and his gross radio income from the past year as $2,000 or less on page 2 of this document. He also indicated that he had enclosed $37 for his initiation fees and first dues payment. Baer (1909-1959) fought from 1929-1941. Baer won the heavyweight championship by knocking out Primo Carnera in 11 rounds on June 14, 1934. He lost the title to Jim Braddock in 15 rounds on June 13, 1935 in one of the greatest upsets in boxing history. Three months later, Joe Louis knocked him out in four rounds. Baer also starred in films, from The Prizefighter and the Lady (1933) to Utah Blaine (1957), and his son, Max Baer, Jr., became an actor best known for his role as Jethro Bodine on The Beverly Hillbillies. Lightly toned and creased. Paperclip impression in upper left corner. Random ink stains. Folded twice and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition. Previously authenticated by PSA/DNA.
