MAX MULLER
Letter from Glasgow, explaining that he has "neither time nor
strength" for promoting a proposal
Autograph Letter signed: "F. Max Muller", 2 pages (front and
verso), 4¼x7. 29 Buckingham Terrace, Glasgow (Scotland), 1892 January
18. To "Dear Sir", in full: "I am lecturing at present in
the University of Glasgow, and I am so overwhelmed with work of different kinds
that I am afraid I cannot help you in reaching your plan. It would require a
great deal of organizing, and I have neither time nor strength for that. If your
plan was taken up by younger men, I have no doubt it might do a great deal of
good, also your idea of having Antiquarian Exhibitions seems to me very
practicable, only I have no time to spare. I have just published an almost
entirely rewritten edition of my Science of Languages where you would find most
of what you want for your essay on the Ladder of Language. If you read
[illegible phrase] will give you ample material. Believe me, Yours
faithfully". German-born Friedrich Max Muller (1823-1900) was a celebrated -
though controversial scholar in the fields of philology, comparative religion
and Indian studies. He published a 50-volume work, Sacred Books of the
East. At a time when Britain ruled India, he helped develop dialogues
between European and Indian intellectuals. He popularized the term henotheism:
worshipping one God while acknowledging the possible existence of others.
Conservative Christians and Hindus both accused him of trying to undermine their
respective faiths. Toned and creased. Multiple mailing folds. Notch at lower
right edge. Edges and corners worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
