3½x5½ image of "the Cheeky Chappy" in one of his flamboyant outfits.
Photograph signed: "Yours Sincerely/Max Miller". Sepia, 3½5½. Max Miller was the stage name of English comedian Thomas Henry Sargent (1894-1963). On stage from 1920, following his release from military service in World War I, Miller had top billing in variety shows of the 1930s, forties and fifties. Miller played the piano and guitar, wore flamboyant outfits like the one shown here, and told risqué jokes that often ran afoul of the censors. Miller released his first recording Confessions of a Cheeky Chappy, in 1932. His movie appearances include one of special interest: Hoots Mon! (1940), in which he performs his music hall routine; the only surviving film of Miller doing his routine. He was not a great success on television, hampered by censorship and apparently missing the feedback of a live audience. Paper residue on verso. Corners lightly worn. Slight crease on bottom right corner. Fine condition.
