MAXINE ELLIOTT
Bold signature on a small card
Signature: "Maxine Elliott", 3½x2½. American actress Maxine
Elliott (1868-1940, born Jessie Dermott in Rockland, Maine) made her
first stage appearance in 1890 in The Middleman and got her first
big break when playwright and theater manager Agustin Daly hired her to support
his star Ada Rehan. Elliott appeared in 21 Broadway productions, mostly in
comedies and romances, between 1894 and 1920, and made a few silent films,
between 1913 and 1919. A shrewd businesswoman, she opened her own theatre
in New York City, the Maxine Elliott Theatre, around 1908; the only Broadway
theatre below 41st Street. During World War I Elliott provided war relief in
Belgium. She made her final Broadway appearance in 1920's Trimmed in
Scarlet, and then retired a wealthy woman. Paper residue from previous
matting affixed to verso. Signed on the verso of a name card with the name
crossed out. Otherwise, fine condition.
