Maxine Kumin (1925-2014) has published (through 2007) 16 volumes of poetry, 5 novels,
many essays, and 16 children's books. Four of the children's books were co-authored with
Anne Sexton, with whom Kumin shared lunch on the day of Sexton's suicide in 1974. She is
known for her keen observations of rural New England, and for her straightforward,
unpretentious style. Her many honors include the 1973 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry for "Up
Country." This piece connects to Kumin's life in more ways than one. She was formerly
poetry consultant to the Library of Congress (1981-1982). Also, she and her husband breed
Arabian and quarter horses at their home in New Hampsire. Fine condition.
