Inscribed “For Carl Davis - 100 years -”. In Full: “A Wish by May Swenson/ Out of an hour I built a hut/ and like a Hindu sat/ immune in the wind of time/ From a hair I made a path/ and walked and both/ rock and wilderness became/ my space and thoroughfare/ with sorrow for a skin/ I felt no wound/ Pleasant power like a nut/ ripened and split within me/ where there had been wrath/ It loosened all the world to quiet noonday/ my face in the rock/ my name on the wildest tree/ my flesh the heath/ of a peaceful clime” Beneath the final line in purple ink: “page 159 To Mix With Time © 1963 - REPRINTED/ In Things Taking Place © 1978 (COMING NOVEMBER)”. May Swenson (1913-1989) was a poet who published several books of poetry, the first of which was Another Animal (1954), and followed her debut effort up with A Cage of Spines (1958), and then, in 1963 To Mix with Time New and Selected Poems (1963).
