MAYNARD FERGUSON
Shown playing his trumpet
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Erin/Maynard/Ferguson".
B/w, 10x8. Captioned in lower margin. Canadian-born jazz trumpet player and
band leader Maynard Ferguson (1928-2006) first came to prominence in
Stan Keaton's Innovations Orchestra in Los Angeles. He left Keaton in 1954
to work on film soundtracks for Paramount Pictures, playing the trumpet in
such notable films as The Ten Commandments. After leaving Paramount,
Ferguson formed his Birdland Dream Band, and he later led other bands
that toured across the U.S. and worldwide. Ferguson recorded several albums,
ranging from big band swing to cool jazz to jazz/rock, the genre featured on one
of his most popular albums, Chameleon. He also had a Top 40
hit in 1977 with "Gonna Fly Now", the theme from Rocky. Ferguson, who
was known for his ability to skillfully play in the high registers of the
trumpet, also developed unique instruments, including a trumpet,
played with the left hand rather than the right and the "Firebird" and
"Superbone", variations on the trombone. Fine condition.
