JOHN V. LINDSAY
Playbill cover for a production of The Visit, Chemin de Fer, and Holiday, signed by the New York politician, presumably during his time as Mayor. Also signed by his wife, Mary
Show bill cover signed: "John Linday", "Mary Lindsay", in blue ink, 5¾x9. Cover for a Playbill from a performance of The Visit, Chemin de Fer, and Holiday. John V. Lindsay (1921-2000) was Mayor of New York City from 1966-1973. Lindsay, who had previously served as a U.S. Congressman from New York (1959-1965), received one delegate vote on the first ballot at the 1968 Republican National Convention. He became a Democrat in 1971 and ran a short-lived campaign for the 1972 Democratic presidential nomination. A veteran of WWII, Lindsay had practiced law before entering politics, and returned to his practice after his career in politics had ended. However, despite his end in politics, Lindsay remained a popular public figure with his many guest hosting appearances on Good Morning America, his novel The Edge, and his short lived acting attempt which spawned one role in the 1975 film Rosebud. Mary Lindsay (1926-2004), who also signs, was married to the politician from 1949 until his death in 2000. Heavily toned. Lightly soiled. Left edge torn and frayed from binding. Slight creases. Pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
