Mayor John Lindsay responds to constituent's letter regarding the
assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Typed Letter Signed: "John V. Lindsay" as Mayor of New York
City, 1p, 8½x11. New York, New York, 1968 June 27. On letterhead of
City of New York, Office of the Mayor. To: Miss Claire Huchet, New York, New
York. In full: "Dear Miss Huchet, You were kind enough to share your
thoughts with me at the time of the tragic death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.,
and now our nation is faced once again with another shameful and senseless
assassination. Let us hope and pray that we can look within ourselves to the
highest human values and ideals. Sincerely," John Vliet Lindsay
(1921-2000) was Mayor of New York City from 1966-1973. Lindsay, who had
previously served as a U.S. Congressman from New York (1959-1965),
received one delegate vote on the first ballot at the 1968 Republican National
Convention. He became a Democrat in 1971 and ran a short-lived campaign for the
1972 Democratic presidential nomination. A veteran of WWII, Lindsay had
practiced law before entering politics. Normal mailing folds. Fine
