ROBERT "BOB" BRISCOE
His signature as Lord Mayor of Dublin
Signature: "Bob Briscoe" as Lord Mayor of Dublin, 6x3 sheet, affixed to an 8½x11 page with a magazine photo showing him during a visit to Boston in 1957. Second unidentified signature. Ink note (unknown hand): Sheraton Plaza, March 18, 1957. ROBERT BRISCO (1894-1969), who generally went by Bob, fought with the Irish Republican Army in the Irish War of Independence, and on the anti-treaty side in the ensuing Irish Civil War. He traveled with future President Eamon de Valera on his visit to the US. A member of parliament for the Fianna Fail Party (1927-1965), he served twice as Lord Mayor of Dublin (1956-1957, 1961-1962). Drawing on his IRA experience, he helped train and equip the Irgun during the struggle for Israeli independence. The visit shown here elicited one of Yogi Berra's famous "Yog-isms." Informed that Dublin had a Jewish Lord Mayor, Yogi replied, "Only in America!" From the collection of Ralph Errington Ward (1926-2009) a fighter pilot and squadron commander in the China-Burma-India Theater of World War II. Ward went on to become President and CEO of Cheseborough-Ponds, Inc., transforming the cosmetics firm into a major home product conglomerate. Toned with adhesive show through. Edges frayed from binding. Otherwise, fine condition.
