RUDY GIULIANI and JOE TORRE
20x16 glossy photo of the New York Mayor and Yankee skipper in customized Yankee fireman's hats during the 2001 World Series, signed by both. Torre has added, "I love NY."
Photograph signed: "Joe Torre/I love NY", "Rudy Giuliani". Color, 20x16. Shown arm in arm, Torre with US flag in hand, both in customized Yankee fireman's helmets, during the 2001 World Series. When airliners hijacked by terrorists felled the twin towers of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, RUDOLPH "RUDY" GIULIANI was concluding his second term as New York's Mayor, and New York Yankee manager JOE TORRE was leading his team to its seventh consecutive postseason, including four World Championships in the prior five years. Since Yankee Stadium was only nine miles from "ground zero," some suggested that playoff baseball should be postponed in deference to the tragedy, or moved elsewhere. New York City would have none of that, and the playoff games at Yankee Stadium became defiant statements that Americans would not cower in fear. The Yankees lost the Series, 4-3, to the Arizona Diamondbacks, and never won another World Series with Joe Torre at the helm (through 2007), although they played in the postseason every year. Giuliani's approval rating among New Yorkers, which at stood at 36% only one year before, rose to 79%, and he was lionized as "America's mayor." But he failed dismally in his bid for the Presidency in 2008, obliged to withdraw even before the first Republican primary. Future disappointments not withstanding, both men, and the country, stood tall during the World Series of October 2001, as this photo so clearly demonstrates. Fine condition.
