RUDY GIULIANI
The Mayor of New York City and the New York Yankees Manager are shown together wearing custom Yankee fire helmets in this 8½x11 photograph.
Photograph signed: "Rudy/Giuliani" and "Joe Torre" in black felt tip, Color 8½x11. Rudy Giuliani (b. 1944), a former Democrat, was Associate Attorney General in the Reagan administration (1981-1983), leaving that office to become US Attorney for the Southern District of New York so that he could personally prosecute cases. He gained a reputation as a tough prosecutor, jailing Wall Street legends Ivan Boesky and Michael Millken, and pursuing organized crime, drug dealers and political corruption. Giuliani was Mayor of New York City from 1994-2001, easily securing re-election and becoming a national hero for his leadership during and after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. New York City law prevented him from seeking a third term, and other considerations (a messy divorce and prostate cancer) dissuaded him from opposing Hillary Clinton for the US Senate nomination. Giuliani was considered a strong contender for the Republican Presidential nomination in 2008, but his strategy of saving resources for the later, big state primaries proved unsound. He withdrew from the race after faring badly in the Florida primary, endorsed John McCain, and campaigned hard for the Republican ticket in the fall. In an 18-year Major League career beginning in 1961, Joe Torre made the All-Star nine times, playing for the Braves (in both Milwaukee and Atlanta), Cardinals and Mets. In 1971 with St. Louis, he was the National League's Most Valuable Player, leading the league in batting average (.363), total bases, RBI's (137) and several other hitting categories. The versatile Torre caught 903 games, while playing 787 at 1B, 515 at 3B, and two in the outfield. Beginning in 1977, Torre managed the same three teams he had played for. Then, in 1996, he took over the reins of the New York Yankees, leading them to six pennants and four World Championships through 2006. In the first half of the 2007 season, he passed Miller Huggins (1,796) and Casey Stengel (1,851) to become the second longest-reigning Yankees manager (1,862 at mid-season), trailing only Joe McCarthy (2,348 games between 1931 and 1946). Declining a new Yankees contract at a reduced salary, Torre became manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2008, taking the club to the National League Championship series in each of his first two seasons.
