Signing as Mayor of Los Angeles
Signature: "Tom Bradley" as Mayor, 6x4¼. Typed caption. Tom Bradley (1917-1998, born in Calvert, Texas), Los Angeles' first black City Councilman, was the first black man to serve as Mayor of a predominantly white city. The son of sharecroppers who grew up in poverty, Breadley nevertheless went on to become Mayor of Los Angeles for an unprecedented five terms (1973-1993). His administration was noted for opening up city government to minorities and women and for securing the 1984 Summer Olympic Games for the city. But he was also mayor during the videotaped beating of Rodney King in 1991. A jury acquitted the four police officers involved, which sparked the worst riots of that decade in the United States and which left over 50 people dead. Bradley was the unsuccessful Democratic candidate for Governor of California in 1982 and 1986. Fine condition.
