Tom Bradley (1917-1998), Los Angeles' first Black City Councilman, was the first African American to serve as Mayor of a predominantly white city. Mayor of Los Angeles for an unprecedented five terms (1973-1993), his administration was noted for opening up city government to minorities and women. He is credited as having turned Los Angeles into one of the "most diversified and important cities in the world". He also made multiple appearances as himself in a number of onscreen productions including Freedom Spectacular (1964), The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson (1973), and Late Night with David Letterman (1985).
