The Mayor of Los Angeles writes a letter to actress Laraine Day
thanking her for help with the "Los Angeles Street Scene" Festival, obtained
from Day's estate.
Typed Letter signed: "Tom Bradley" as Mayor of Los
Angeles, 1 page, 8½x11. City Hall, Los Angeles, 1978 November 14. To
Ms. Loraine Day, Beverly Hills, California. In full: "Dear Ms. Day: It
is with deep gratitude that I express my personal appreciation and that of the
people of this City to you for ably assisting us in the recently concluded "Los
Angeles Street Scene" Festival. There were many complexities to properly staging
this event, and your valued support made it possible for us to together stage a
most successful event. Thank you so much for your interest and cooperation.
Sincerely," Tom Bradley (1917-1998), Los Angeles' first Black City Councilman,
was the first Black to serve as Mayor of a predominantly white city.
Mayor of Los Angeles for an unprecedented five terms (1973-1993),
his administration was noted for opening up city government to minorities and
women. This item
is from the estate of actress Laraine Day, formerly married from 1947 to 1960
to baseball Hall of Fame manager Leo Durocher. They enjoyed the friendship
of US Presidents, Hollywood celebrities and baseball veterans, many of whom
inscribed remembrances to the couple. Multiple mailing folds. Corners creased.
Lightly toned. Stained on verso with show through. Signature lightly beaded but
legible. Otherwise, fine condition.
