McHALE'S NAVY TV CAST: TIM CONWAY, ERNEST BORGNINE, CARL BALLANTINE and BOB HASTINGS Photograph from the ABC sitcom McHale's Navy (1962-1966) featuring the signatures of 4 cast members Photograph signed: "Ernest/ Borgnine", "Bob Hastings", "Tim/ Conway" and "Carl/ Ballantine/ 94" in various inks, b/w, 10x8. McHale's Navy ran on ABC from 1962 to 1966. Originating from the 1962 drama Seven Against the Sea, this family-friendly sitcom was an American favorite for the 4 years it remained on the air. ERNEST BORGNINE (1917-2012) proved his versatility in the film version of Paddy Chayefsky's acclaimed television play Marty (1955). Borgnine's moving portrayal earned him an Oscar, a British Academy award, a Cannes Film Festival award, and an award from both the New York Film Critics and the National Board of Review. In 1962, he was cast in the role that most baby boomers remember him for: Quentin McHale in the sitcom McHale's Navy. During the '60s and '70s, Borgnine appeared in many films including The Dirty Dozen (1966), Ice Station Zebra (1968) and The Wild Bunch (1969). Following the demise of McHale's Navy, Borgnine continued his busy career. Notable features include The Poseidon Adventure (1972) and Law and Disorder (1974). BOB HASTINGS (1925-2014) was a radio comedian before he moved to TV in the 1950s. After a recurring role as an army lieutenant on The Phil Silvers' Show (1955-1959), he began playing navy lieutenant and yes-man Elroy Carpenter on Ernest Borgnine's McHale's Navy (1962-1966). A couple of the other recurring roles occupied by Hastings include Captain Ramsey on General Hospital in 1981 and bar owner Tommy Kelsey on All in the Family from 1971 to 1976. He has also done many voiceovers for animated series and commercials. Additionally, Hastings was a popular guest at old-time radio fan conventions. Actor and comedian TIM CONWAY (1933-2019) gained tremendous popularity as Ensign Doug Parker on McHale's Navy, and the show effectively made Conway a star. The talented Conway has starred in several of his own series, including The Tim Conway Show (1970 and a later incarnation in 1980-1981) and The Tim Conway Comedy Hour (1970). He has also been a regular performer on such series as The New Steve Allen Show (1961), The Carol Burnett Show (1975-1978) and Carol Burnett & Company (1989). Conway is the star of the popular "Dorf" video series of hilarious takes on sports, and he has also appeared in such feature films as The Apple Dumpling Gang (1975) and Cannonball Run II (1984). His vocal talents can be heard on the SpongeBob SquarePants and Hermie & Friends animated series. Actor and magician CARL BALLANTINE (1922-2009), who is best known for his role as Torpedoman Lester Gruber in the TV series, McHale's Navy (1962-1966), and the 1964 film of the same name, was an aspiring magician whose tricks roused only laughter from audiences. Capitalizing on his ineptitude, he showed up as "The Great Ballantine" on such shows as The Ed Sullivan Show and The Steve Allen Show. Ballantine has also appeared in such feature films as The Shakiest Gun in the West (1968), The World's Greatest Lover (1977), and Mr. Saturday Night (1992). Moreover, he has made a number of made-for-TV movies. Ballantine, who is sometimes billed as Carl Ballentine, also guest starred on several TV shows. Fine condition.
