Autograph Letter signed: "McK Buchanan", 1 page, 5x5, affixed
to a 4½x5 card (2 surfaces). No place, March 4, n.y. In full: "Will
Col. Brown please send letters for my daughter & self to Elmira &
oblige. [signature] "Bus. Is great with me here. I'll soon get back the
money I lost in New York". McKean Buchanan (1823-1872) was a
prominent stage actor known for his Shakespearean roles. Prints of
Buchanan as Hamlet and Macbeth were popular. He toured widely with his
company, at a time when even small US towns welcomed stage performances of
Shakespeare. The daughter mentioned in this letter was certainly Virginia
Buchanan, who learned her skills in supporting Shakespeare roles like
Desdemona and Ophelia and went on to become a prominent stage actress in her own
right. The actor was no known relation to Union Civil War naval officer McKean
Buchanan. Tape affixed at left and right edge. Creased. Worn. Lightly soiled.
