Photograph signed "Best Wishes Forever/Mel A. Tomlinson/'79". B/w, 10x7¾. American dancer Tomlinson (1954-2019) was known for his powerful build, incredible flexibility and clear and precise style. He danced with a number of companies as principal dancer or soloist in the 1970s, including the Dance Theatre of Harlem (1974-1976 and 1978-1981) and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre (1976-1978) before joining the New York City Ballet (1981-1987) as that company's only black dancer. Notable appearances during this time include a turn as the snake in Arthur Mitchell's Manifestations (1975) and a revival of Lar Lubovitch's The Time Before the Time After (After the Time Before). Since then, he's been a dancer and master teacher in the Boston Ballet's CITYDANCE program, which brings classical dance performances to Boston schoolchildren. Lightly soiled, cracked, creased and bowed. Light scratches (not visible head-on) and scuff marks on image. Lightly creased corners with rounded bottom left corner. Paper loss on verso (no show-through). Otherwise in fine condition.
