PURLIE BROADWAY CAST: MELBA MOORE & OSSIE DAVIS. Playbill signed: "Love,/Melba Moore" and "Ossie Davis". 52p, 6x9. Playbill for the Premier Performance of The Broadway Theatre's New York production of Purlie, March 15, 1970. MELBA MOORE was a teacher before taking the lead Broadway role in Hair. At age 25, Moore won a Theatre World Award and a Tony for her performance in this play as Lutiebelle. In 1972, she hosted a TV variety show The Melba Moore/Clifton Davis Hour, and five years later, made her first film appearance in the movie version of Hair (1977). Her hit songs, mostly of the disco and R&B genres, include "This Is It" (1976), "Love's Comin' At Ya" (1982), "A Little Bit More" (1986) and "Falling" (1987). This musical comedy was based on the play Purlie Victorious by OSSIE DAVIS, a multitalented actor, director, screenwriter and historian. He married singer/actress Ruby Dee in 1948, two years after they met when he made his Broadway debut in Jeb Turner. Over the years, the couple has appeared together on Broadway (A Raisin in the Sun), screen (debuting in No Way Out in 1950) and television (from Roots: The Next Generation to the PBS series With Ossie & Ruby). In 1984, Davis appeared in two feature films, The House of God and Harry and Son (directed by Paul Newman), and a documentary, Bill Moyer's Walk Through the 20th Century: The Second American Revolution. Lightly creased. Slightly soiled. Overall, fine condition.
