MELDRICK TAYLOR
Shown battling Julio César Chavez in "the fight of the
decade"
Photograph signed: "Meldrick Taylor". B/w, 8x10 overall, image
4x6 (one surface). Meldrick Taylor (b. 1966) capped a 99-4 amateur
boxing record by winning a Gold Medal in the featherweight class at the
1984 Olympics. Turning pro, he won 24 straight fights (with one draw)
before meeting Julio César Chavez - also undefeated at 68-0, in a Las Vegas
light welterweight WBC title bout (March 17, 1990) which Ring magazine
would call "the fight of the decade". In that fight, shown here, Taylor was
ahead on points going into the final round, but wearing down under the brutal
punches of Chavez. The ref stopped the fight with 2 seconds left, giving Chavez
a win by TKO. Taylor battled on, including a hard-fought rematch with Chavez
in 1994, but was never quite the same fighter after this fight. He finished with
a record of 28-8-1 (20 of his wins by knockout). Taylor titled his
autobiography Two Seconds from Glory. Fine
condition.
