MELDRIM THOMSON, JR.
Signed photo with an American flag lapel pin
Photograph signed: "Best wishes/Meldrim Thomson Jr.". B/w, 4x5¼ overall, 2¾x3¾ image, one surface. Meldrim Thomson, Jr. (1912-2001) moved his legal publishing business from New York to New Hampshire in 1954. After unsuccessful bids for Governor in 1968 and 1970, he won three consecutive terms in the office (1972-1978). A staunch conservative, Thomson ran on the slogan "Axe the Tax," and did abolish the state income and sales taxes while in office. He also got the slogan "Live Free or Die" imprinted on all New Hampshire license plates. The unconventional Governor chased down speeders in his official car, arrived in military fatigues to supervise arrest of demonstrators at the Seabrook nuclear power plant (1977), and suggested that the New Hampshire National Guard should have nuclear weapons. Lightly toned and creased. Errors in negative were reproduced in photo. Pinhead-sized impression near top left corner. Otherwise in fine condition.
