Greek politician and actress poses angrily in promotional photograph from her play A Dream of Passion
Inscribed photograph signed: "To Robert/ Best wishes/ Melina Mercouri" in black ink. B/w, 8x10. In 1960, Mercouri (1920-1994, born Maria Amalia Mercouris in Athens, Greece) gained international stardom for her portrayal of a vivacious Piraeus prostitute in the film Never on Sunday (1960). It was directed by Jules Dassin, who directed several of her subsequent films (1964's Topkapi being the best) and, in 1966, became her second husband. Mercouri vehemently protested when Greece was taken over by military junta in 1966, and her citizenship was revoked. In 1977, she returned to her former home and was elected to the Greek Parliament. From 1981 to 1985, Mercouri served as Greece's Minister of Culture and Sciences, and from 1985-1989 was her country's Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports. In the U.S., Mercouri made her Broadway debut in the 1965 musical version of Never on Sunday, titled Illya Darling. Corners and edges worn. Stains on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
