A singer and writer of country music that reflected his own rough and tumble early life, including a stint in prison; MERLE HAGGARD (1937-2016) greatly influenced the direction of country music with electric instruments and a honky-tonk style that contrasted with the smoother Nashville sound of the 1960s. He became a major part of the raw country sound also found in Willie Nelson's music. Haggard had 38 No. 1 hits from 1966-1987, beginning with "I'm a Lonesome Fugitive" (1966). His most popular songs include "Okie From Muskogee" (1969),  "Yesterday's Wine" - with George Jones (1982), "Poncho And Lefty" - with Willie Nelson (1983) and his last - "Twinkle, Twinkle, Lucky Star" (1987). He received 13 Academy of Country Music Awards, 5 Country Music Association Awards, and 3 Grammy Awards. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1994. His autobiography, Sing Me Back Home, was published in 1981. The daughter of Oklahoma sharecroppers, BONNIE OWENS (1926-2006), born Bonnie Campbell, made a name in country music singing with husbands Buck Owens and Merle Haggard and with The Strangers. She also recorded several solo albums in the late 1960s. Her best known song was Just Between the Two of Us, a duet with friend Fuzzy Owen in 1961 which hit the charts again when she sang it with Haggard in 1964.
