MERRILL ASHLEY
Graceful pose of the ballerina in 1987, when she was a principal performer with the New York City Ballet.
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Ellen,/Best Wishes,/Merrill/Ashley". B/w, 8x10. New York City Ballet publicity photograph by Steven Caras, New York (stamped on verso). Taken in 1987. Merrill Ashley (born in 1950) joined the New York City Ballet in 1967, becoming a soloist in 1974 and a principal in 1977. In 1977, the legendary George Balanchine created a showcase role for her in Ballo della Regina, and he would also create Ballade for Ashley in 1980. From 1969-1973, Ashley had toured the U.S. in a small company headed by d'Amboise; she was also a director and dancer in her own company, Merrill Ashley and Dancers, from 1980-1981. When Ashley retired from the stage in 1997, she held the honor of having the longest career as a ballerina with the New York City Ballet. Immediately joining the artistic staff of the company, she became the first American ballerina to stage a Balanchine ballet in Cuba when she brought Ballo della Regina to the island nation in 2000. Her remarkable career is detailed in her autobiography, Dancing for Balanchine. Lightly creased at blank margins and corners, light black mark at lower right corner. Minor surface creases (most not evident head on), tackhead-size stain at background above right arm. Overall, fine and lovely.
