MICHAEL ALDRIDGE
Handwritten note on his calling card, signed with his initials
Autograph Note signed: "Dear Mr. Slapinski,/Thank you for yr. letter./I enclose a photo with/my compliments. [Item not included.]/M. A.". 5½x3½ card imprinted with his name. English character actor Michael Aldridge (1920-1994) made his London stage debut in French Without Tears on the eve of World War II (August 1939). Serving in the RAF throughout the war, rising to flight lieutenant, he returned to the stage in the postwar years. He gained prominence in the long-running London play Salad Days (1954-1957). He played many Shakespearean roles, bringing a few of these - like Polonius in Hamlet - to film and television. He appeared in that rare occurrence, an Andrew Lloyd Webber flop (Jeeves, 1975). Seen on TV for nearly half a century until his death, Aldridge played a variety of characters from British history: Wat Tyler, Prince Albert and Neville Chamberlain. He appeared in BBC mini-series based on two of the most famous spy novels: as Percy Alleline in LeCarre's Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (1979) and Silas Gaunt in Len Deighton's Game, Set and Match (1987). He portrayed Seymour on the series Last of the Summer Wine (1986-1990). Fine condition.
