MICHAEL HESELTINE
Signing as Minister for Aerospace and Shipping in the Prime Minister Heath's government.
Signature: "Michael Heseltine/5 April 1973" as Minister for Aerospace and Shipping, 4x2½. Clipped letterhead, press clipping and ink note (unknown hand) below signature. Michael Heseltine (b. 1933) was a Conservative M. P. (1966-2001) and a Cabinet Minister under Prime Ministers Thatcher and Major. He held the junior ministry shown here (not of Cabinet rank) under Prime Minister Edward Heath (1973-1974).Under Margaret Thatcher, he served as Secretary of State for the Environment (1979-1983) and Secretary of State for Defence (1983-1986). But he clashed repeatedly with Thatcher, finally storming out of 10 Downing Street to announce his resignation to the Press. Now a "back-bencher", he was frequently critical of Thatcher, and challenged her for leadership of the Conservative Party in 1990. Heseltine garnered enough votes from Conservative MP's to force a second vote (November 20, 1990), after which Thatcher resigned. In the voting which followed, however, John Major, not Michael Heseltine, became the new Party leader and Prime Minister. Heseltine joined Major's government, serving in several positions, including Deputy Prime Minister and First Secretary of State. Retiring from the House of Commons (but not from politics) in 2001, he received a life peerage as Baron Heseltine. Heseltine has remained quite outspoken on policy issues, and was instrumental in David Cameron's ascendance to Conservative leader in 2005. Irregularly cut. Corners slightly worn. Crease on top margin. Light surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
