B/w photograph showing the Oscar-winning director of The Deer Hunter filming at an outdoor location
Photograph inscribed and signed: "For Chuck McKeen/Best Wishes/Michael Cimino". B/w, 10x8. Michael Cimino, probably born in 1939, was a successful director of TV commercials in the 1960s, and co-wrote the scripts for two well-known films (Silent Running, 1972; and Magnum Force (1973). The first feature film he directed, Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (1974), was also a success. However, Cimino is most famous for his biggest directing success, The Deer Hunter (1978), and his most spectacular failure, Heaven's Gate (1980). The Deer Hunter garnered five Oscars, including Best Director for Cimino. Heaven's Gate cost an estimated $50 million to make, and earned only $3 million at the box office. It precipitated the collapse of a studio, United Artists, and caused other studios to impose tighter controls on film production. Ink note (unknown hand) on verso (no show through). Otherwise, fine condition.
