Right Hand Sketch signed: "NSDQ!/Michael Durant/Super 64", on 7½x10¼ light card stock. Michael Durant (born 1961) is an American pilot who was held prisoner in Mogadishu after his helicopter was downed. The story of his capture is depicted in the 2001 film Black Hawk Down. He participated in combat operations Prime Chance, Desert Storm, Gothic Serpent and Just Cause. His medals and awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross with oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star with valor Device, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, POW medal and three Air Medals. On October 3, 1993 during the Battle of Mogadishu, part of Operation Gothic Serpent, Durant was piloting Super Six Four a MH-60L Black Hawk Helicopter. It was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade and crashed. Hostile Somalis converged on the area, killing his entire crew. He was captured and held for eleven days until he released to the custody of the International Committee of the Red Cross. After the ordeal he recovered and continued his career until retiring in 2001, having over 3,700 flight hours. He published a book In the Company of Heroes in 2003 in which he tells the story of his career and capture. Pencil note (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
