MICHAEL HICKS BEACH, EARL OF ST ALDWYN IThe longstanding member of the House of Commons pens his name as well as a sentiment on this piece of card stock Autograph Sentiment Signed: “Yours faithfully/ M Hicks Beach/ March 12th 1888” 3½x2½ piece of card stock affixed to an irregularly cut 4¾x3½ sheet of paper. Two additional biographical clippings affixed. Michael Hicks Beach, 1st Earl of St Aldwyn (1837-1916) was a British politician affiliated with the Conservative Party. He was known as “Black Michael”. From 1885 to 1886 and then again from 1895 to 1902 he served as Chancellor of the Exchequer. Also, from 1885 to 1886 he led the Conservative Party in the House of Commons. Moreover, he functioned as President of the Board of Trade from 1888 to 1892. When Beach took his peerage, he was Father of the House (1901-1906). Piece of card stock is sparsely stained with corners and edges that are worn. A portion of “(Sir)” written in an unknown hand in pencil along the left edge. Rippling of sheet below second biographical clipping. Otherwise, fine condition.
