MICHAEL FARADAY
The chemist/physicist pens this autograph letter regarding the visit of a friend
Autograph Letter Signed: "M Faraday", 1p, 8x7½, affixed to sheet of same size. R.I. (Royal Institution), no date, Thursday. To "Dear Abbott". In full: "I shall be at home tomorrow evng till [two words illegible] 8th. Can you come up. I have some things from my brother for you. I am anxious [illegilbe] the first. Yours Ever". In 1823, Faraday had been appointed Fullerian Professor of Chemistry at the Royal Institute of Great Britain for life. Abbott was probably his friend, Benjamin Abbott. English chemist and physicist Michael Faraday (1791-1867) contributed significantly to the fields of electormagnetism and electrochemistry. He discovered two chlorides of carbon in 1820 and benzine in 1825. In 1831, Faraday discovered the induction of electric currents and the first dynamo. In 1845, he found that a magnetic field will rotate the plane of polarization. Faraday also invented electrolysis. Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Lightly soiled, shaded at upper blank margin. Light show through of mounting glue at corners. Pencil notes (unknown hand) at upper left margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
