MICHAEL K. TIPPETT
Signed b/w photo of the British composer in a light-colored shirt from the shoulders up
Two items: 1)
Photograph signed "Michael Tippett" in blue ink. B/w, 5¾x8¼. Lightly scratched (not visible head-on). Otherwise in fine condition. 2) Typed letter signed "Nicholas Wright" in blue ink. 1 page, 8¼x11½ on Tippett's letterhead. London, Feb. 24, 1988. Addressed to John A. Burton, 77 Cheeryble Street, Droylsden, Manchester M35 6AS. This letter is from Wright, who appears to be Tippett's secretary, thanking Burton for a letter dated Feb. 18, 1988 and enclosing a signed photograph. Lightly toned and creased. Letter is folded in half horizontally and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition. Tippett (1905-1998) was a renowned British composer whose first published piece, String Quartet No. 1, appeared in 1935. Among his best known works are his Fourth Symphony and his oratorio, A Child of Our Time, a protest against tyranny produced during World War II. (Tippett, a lifelong pacifist, was jailed for three months during that conflict). He was knighted in 1966. There was a month-long festival of his compositions on his 90th birthday, including the premier of his last opera, The Rose Lake, which has been widely performed around the world since.
