MIKE TODD
The producer signs a note on a 6x4½ album leaf.
Autograph Note signed: "To Beverly/Best wishes/Michael Todd", 6x4½ album leaf. Born Avrom Hirsch Golbogen in 1907, Mike Todd became known as "Mr. Showman" for producing big budget Broadway shows. Todd is perhaps best known for producing the 1956 Hollywood spectacular, Around the World In 80 Days, the adaptation of Jules Verne's 1872 novel. The movie, which was the second filmed in his Todd-AO process, featured a cast of name stars and exotic locations and received six Academy Awards (Best Picture, Best Score, Best Editing, Best Cinematography and Best Adapted Screenplay) and was also nominated for a Best Director Oscar (Michael Anderson). Todd, who had risked his personal fortune to bring the film to the screen, met actress Elizabeth Taylor shortly after he finished production and she accompanied him on a worldwide tour to promote it. The two were married on February 2, 1957, the day after her divorce from British actor Michael Wilding became final. Taylor and Todd, the love of her life, had an eight-month-old daughter at the time he was killed in the crash of his plane, Lucky Liz, on March 23, 1958. Stained at lower right margin, not touching signature. Binding holes at left blank edge. Ink note (unknown hand) at lower margin: "Producer KCBY Radio Jan. 11, 1957". Otherwise, fine condition.
