MICKEY MANTLE
Number 7's opinion of Number 5.
Photograph signed: "Joe D./Sucks/Mickey Mantle". Color, 8x10. On
October 25, 2000, Richard Ben Cramer, author of Joe DiMaggio: The Hero's
Life, said the following in an interview in a "USA Today" chat on-line:
"Joe was certainly responsible for the chill between him and Mantle in
Mickey's rookie year. In 1951, when Mantle arrived, he was so shy he
couldn't say a word to DiMaggio unless the big guy spoke to him first. In fact,
the first words that Joe addressed to Mantle occurred at the end of that season,
the World Series, when Joe bent over the injured Mantle in right center field
and said 'Don't move, they're bringing a stretcher'. The coldness between them
lasted till the end. In fact, I was at a show where both Joe and Mickey were
signing autographs. Mickey walked into Joe's hotel suite and Joe (who knew very
well it was Mickey who'd walked in) growled without looking up, 'Who's there?'
'It's Mickey', said Mantle, affably. Joe still wouldn't look up. 'Mickey who?'
he said." MICKEY MANTLE (1931-1995) and JOE DiMAGGIO (1914-1999)
were the greatest Yankees of the last 60 years. With Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig,
they were the greatest Yankees of all time. Fine condition.
