MICKEY ROONEY Consent form authorizing the Motion Picture Relief Fund to reproduce Mickey Rooney's signature and likeness for a series of stamps raising money for needy film industry veterans. The form is signed by Rooney once to grant permission. A remarkable, perfectly verified example! Document signed: "Mickey Rooney", 1 page, 8½x11. No place, 1947 February 4.  Mickey Rooney grants to the Motion Picture Relief Fund, Inc., its successors and assigns, the exclusive right to use his name, autograph, photographic likeness, or artist's sketch of the likeness, for reproduction on engraved, embossed or printed stamps, and in stamp albums, and in connection with the advertising and exploitation of these stamps and stamp albums for sale throughout the world. Mickey Rooney (1920-2014) was the son of vaudevillians who put him into their act when he was 15 months old. He debuted onscreen in the silent short Not to Be Trusted in 1926 at the age of six. In 1998, 72 years later, Rooney appeared in Babe: Pig in the City and a later film, The Fighting Temptations, was released in 2003. During the course of his career, Rooney received four Academy Award nominations: two for Best Actor (Babes in Arms, 1939; The Human Comedy, 1943) and two for Best Supporting Actor (The Bold and the Brave, 1956; The Black Stallion, 1979). He was awarded special Oscars in 1938 "for significant contribution in bringing to the screen the spirit and personification of youth, and as a juvenile player setting a high standard of ability and achievement" and in 1982 "in recognition of his 60 years of versatility in a variety of memorable film performances". Rooney, who also won a Golden Globe Best Actor award for his performance in the TV movie, Bill, starred in 16 films as Andy Hardy, the wise-cracking son of a small-town judge, from 1937 to 1958. He made his debut on Broadway in 1979, receiving a nomination for a Tony Award for Best Actor for the musical Sugar Babies. The Motion Picture Relief Fund was founded in 1921 to assist ill and needy film industry veterans, as expressed in its motto: "We take care of our own." The fund raised money through voluntary payroll deductions and celebrity events. As President of the Fund from 1939 until his death in 1956, film and radio star Jean Hersholt conceived Hollywood Star Stamps as a fundraising method. These stamps, 468 in all, were sold at dime stores after World War II in sheets of 6-12, at 10 cents per sheet, and were an immediate hit with collectors. Now called the Motion Picture and Television Fund, the non-profit organization funds its own hospital and retirement home. It confers the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award annually at the Academy Awards ceremony to "an individual in the motion picture industry whose humanitarian efforts have brought credit to the industry." Three filing holes at left. Normal mailing folds. Slightly soiled. Slightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
